Lone worker safety FAQs

Plain English answers to common questions about lone worker devices, monitoring, BS 8484, incident evidence, connectivity and training.

Common questions

Is a lone worker device enough on its own?
No. A device or app is one control within a wider system. It needs correct configuration, reliable connectivity, clear escalation, competent managers and staff who have practised using it.
Does BS 8484 automatically mean police will attend?
No. Employers should verify which service is certified, whether the contract uses the relevant pathway, whether a Unique Reference Number applies and what conditions must be met before police escalation.
Is ARC monitoring the same as a manager receiving an alert?
No. An Alarm Receiving Centre is not the same as an internal manager, colleague buddy system, helpdesk or automated notification route.
Can audio and transcripts always be obtained after an incident?
No. Audio, transcripts, controller notes and reports are different evidence types. Availability, retention and access depend on supplier, product, contract and privacy arrangements.
Does a roaming SIM guarantee signal?
No. A roaming SIM may connect to more than one supported mobile network, but it cannot create coverage where no supported network is available.
Why does staff training matter if the supplier provides onboarding?
Supplier onboarding often explains the product. Staff also need realistic practice, permission to act early, confidence with false activations and clarity on what happens after an alert.
